The Muteshekau-shipu Alliance aims to protect and showcase the Magpie River and recognize its rights. To do so, we are emphasizing the importance of the river for the Innu, as well as the river’s international reputation and immense recreational tourism potential. Our Alliance wants to see the river protected from hydroelectric development and in its natural state, so that traditional aboriginal uses and recreational tourism activities can be pursued, to the benefit of our communities.
Canada is committed to protecting 25% of its territory by 2025 and 30% by 2030. We must not miss out on this chance to permanently protect the Magpie River.
Innu Council of Ekuanitshit
Since its inception in 1963, the Innu Council of Ekuanitshit has pursued its mission of providing high-quality services in the areas of health care, education, culture, employment development and the economy, and sports and recreation. The Council defends the inherent and legitimate rights, interests and concerns of the Ekuanitshiunnuat and ensures that the well-being of community members is maintained.
Muteshekau-shipu, the Innu name for the Magpie River, is a 290-km waterway located on the Nitassinan (ancestral territory) of the Innu community of Ekuanitshit. The river has become a symbol of land reappropriation and pride for an entire generation, especially for Innu youth. The Council has passed official resolutions for the protection of Muteshekau-shipu and is taking the lead role in the project to safeguard and showcase the river.
The Minganie RCM
The Minganie RCM is a political entity made up of the mayor of each municipality in the Minganie region and the prefect. Its aim is to ensure the proper administration of regional services. More specifically, it is developing, protecting and enhancing the region in order to maintain or improve its citizens’ standard of living, as well as the vibrancy of the communities and their various organizations, in accordance with the laws and the mandates assigned by the government bodies and municipalities that constitute it.
The Minganie RCM has for several years been directly involved in the project to protect and showcase the Magpie River and has passed many resolutions in support of it.
SNAP Québec
The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (SNAP Québec) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection of nature. It is working to create a network of protected areas across the province to ensure the long-term security of the boreal forest, the Far North, the St. Lawrence and the ecosystems that shelter our endangered species. The organization also ensures that existing protected areas are properly managed.
SNAP Québec has been working for more than 10 years to raise awareness of the Magpie River and to ensure its permanent protection, in particular through circulating a petition, studying the recreational tourism potential of the river, holding political meetings and conferences, producing media files and engaging in direct action.
AEVM
The Association Eaux-Vives Minganie (AEVM) is a group of volunteers who have undertaken to explore the rivers of the Minganie, to share that information and to develop campsites and trails.
Since 1997, volunteers have devoted more than 2000 hours to building, developing and maintaining the trails on the Magpie River. The AEVM has participated in several public consultations on river issues and has raised public awareness through opinion pieces, conferences, forums and public consultations. The AEVM is the organization most intimately familiar with the Magpie watershed, its challenges and its history.
